SplitMyBills compared with Splitwise, Tricount and Settle Up

Choosing a bill-splitting app, or thinking of switching? Here is how SplitMyBills compares with three well-known apps on the things groups ask about most: accounts, ads, cost, platforms, and features. Every fact about another app comes from its own website or store listing.

What SplitMyBills does differently

SplitMyBills has no accounts. You create a sheet, add the people sharing costs, and share one link; everyone with the link can see and update the same balance without signing up or installing anything.

It is free with no paid plan, no ads, and no limit on how many expenses you add. Every feature is available to every group.

  • Works in any browser, and installs as an app on phones and computers.
  • Equal, percentage, and exact-amount splits, with tips and taxes.
  • Recurring expenses, a calendar view, spending charts, and XLS export.
  • Suggested payments to settle up in as few transfers as possible.

When another app may suit you better

SplitMyBills keeps things simple on purpose, so it is not the right fit for everyone. Another app may suit you better if you want:

  • An account that keeps all your groups together across devices.
  • Several currencies in one group, converted at current exchange rates. SplitMyBills uses one currency per group.
  • Receipt scanning, or importing card and bank transactions.
  • A native app from the App Store or Google Play.

Switching from another app

SplitMyBills cannot import groups from other apps. To switch, create a sheet, add the same people, and enter what each person is owed today as a starting expense. New expenses then go straight into SplitMyBills.

Settling the old balances first and starting fresh is often simpler.

How to get started

  1. Create a sheet

Name the group and add the people sharing costs. No sign-up.

  2. Add expenses

Record who paid, how much, and who shares each cost.

  3. Share the link and settle up

Everyone sees the same balance and the suggested payments.

Frequently asked questions

Is SplitMyBills a free alternative to Splitwise?

Yes. SplitMyBills is free with no paid plan, no ads, and no daily limit on expenses. Splitwise has a free plan with a daily expense limit and ads, and a paid Pro plan.

Do I need an account to use SplitMyBills?

No. Each group is a sheet with its own link. Anyone with the link can view and update it, without signing up.

Can I move my groups from Splitwise, Tricount or Settle Up?

Not automatically; there is no import. Create a sheet with the same people and enter the current balances as starting expenses, or settle up first and start fresh.

Does SplitMyBills support several currencies?

Each sheet uses one currency, chosen from more than 110. Amounts are not converted, so expenses in another currency need converting by hand before you add them.

Is there a SplitMyBills app for iPhone and Android?

SplitMyBills runs in the browser and can be installed from it as an app on iPhone, Android, and computers. It is not in the App Store or Google Play.
